Obakeng Lebotse is a Partner in the multidisciplinary Corporate Department of Bookbinder Business Law. He has a broad corporate  and commercial practice (including M&A) and advises on all aspects of local and cross-border transactions.

Obakeng’s practice areas span several specialisations, with a particular emphasis on general corporate and commercial advisory, conveyancing and property, banking and finance, debt capital markets, regulatory and compliance (including data protection), competition law as well as employment and labour. Obakeng works for a global client base across a wide range of sectors, notably in financial services, tourism and hospitality, retail, and energy.

On the conveyancing and property side, Obakeng deals primarily with residential and commercial property, and associated financing transactions. He has experience in all types of Botswana property transactions, including transaction structures, property financing, acquisitions and disposals, leasing matters, as well as construction and development agreements.

  • Acted as counsel to Access Bank Botswana Limited in respect of its establishment of a BWP2,000,000,000 Domestic Term Medium Term Note Programme for listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange.
  • Acted as local counsel to Vitol Holdings II S.A. and its Botswana subsidiaries in its acquisition of 74% of the total issued shares in Engen Limited, a subsidiary of PETRONAS Marketing International Sendirian Berhad.
  • Assisted counsel to Premium Nickel Resources Corporation with respect to the acquisition in Botswana of certain of the Selebi and Selkirk Mine assets from BCL Limited (In Liquidation).
  • Counsel to Botswana Development Corporation in respect of its BWP1,000,000,000 Domestic Medium Term Note Programme.
  • Acted as counsel to Standard Chartered Bank Botswana Limited in respect of the private placement of BWP229,963,000 Notes and BWP93,603,000 Notes- each by way of a standalone issuance and listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange.
  • Acted as local counsel to Allianz SE in its agreement to combine its African operations (excluding South Africa) with Sanlam.
  • Acted as counsel to Golconda Gold Ltd. in respect of the disposal of 100% of the total issued share capital in Mupane Gold Mining Proprietary Limited.
  • Acted as counsel to Scipion Active Trading Fund in its disposal of 100% of the total issued shares in Crosscorn Proprietary Limited to MHMK Capital Botswana Limited.
  • Acted as lead counsel to INEOS Automotive Holdings Limited, a part of the INEOS Automotive Group in its acquisition of a majority interest in Kavango Engineering Proprietary Limited.
  • Acted as local counsel to Edcon Limited and The Foschini Group in the acquisition by The Foschini Group (through its Botswana subsidiary) of certain assets comprising 14 retail clothing stores trading under the ‘Jet’ brand from Edcon Limited’s Botswana subsidiary.
  • Acted as counsel to Babereki Investments Proprietary Limited, which is the investment arm of Botswana’s largest public sector union, on its entry into a special purpose vehicle joint-venture transaction with International Housing Solutions for the construction of a sectional title residential housing development styled Seriti Estate.
  • Acted as counsel to the transaction parties in respect of the acquisition of a controlling interest in Notwane Pharmacy Proprietary Limited.
