In the first segment of our RLIS, we will discuss the recent developments on the Road Traffic Regulations.

Are you thinking of buying a new car? Here are a few things to think about as you take this step.

The fees for original registration of vehicles, as well as for transfer of ownership have been revised through the Road Traffic Regulations (Amendment Regulations) 2021 (S.I. No. 74 Of 2021) (the “Amendment Regulations”)

The Amendment Regulations have introduced an additional “cost-based” fee over and above the existing fee schedule, which is based on the unladen weight of vehicles. The Amendment Regulations have introduced the following:

  • vehicles that cost BWP 100,000.00 are charged a minimum fee of BWP 500.00.
  • vehicles that cost more than BWP 100,000.00 will be charged one percent of their invoice value on original registration.
  • the standard fee for registration on transfer of ownership after original registration has been revised from BWP 169.00 to BWP 190.00; and
  • the standard fee for a duplicate registration book has been revised from BWP 84.00 to BWP 140.00
